Women’s Health Beyond the Basics: The 5 Labs Every Woman Should Know

When most women walk into their doctor’s office, the labs they walk out with don’t tell the full story. A basic check of cholesterol, blood sugar, or thyroid might catch a glaring issue, but it leaves a huge amount of risk unaddressed.
At 91WhiskeyRX, we take a deeper look. Why? Because we believe health is more than a number on a lab slip. We believe health is about protecting your bones, your heart, your hormones, and your future.
Here are five labs we believe every woman should know:
Estradiol: Estradiol is one of the most important markers for women’s health. It’s protective for your bones, supports cardiovascular health, and plays a major role in energy and mood. Low levels can accelerate risks you may not see coming until it’s too late.
A1C (Hemoglobin A1C): This lab shows your average blood sugar over the past 3 months, and it’s one of the strongest predictors of diabetes risk. Even if your “fasting glucose” looks normal, an elevated A1C can reveal that your blood sugar regulation isn’t as strong as it should be.
Lipid Panel with ApoB: Most standard labs only show you LDL cholesterol, but that’s just part of the picture. ApoB tells us how many plaque-building particles are circulating in your blood. You can have “normal” cholesterol and still be at high risk for heart disease if your ApoB is elevated.
Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH): These hormones give insight into ovarian function, fertility status, and menopausal transition. Whether you’re planning a family, navigating perimenopause, or just want to understand how your body is changing with age, these labs provide crucial context.
Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)): This is the genetic wildcard. This is also a lab that many doctors never test for, or actually don’t even know about. Elevated Lp(a) significantly increases your cardiovascular risk, regardless of how clean you eat or how much you work out. For women with a family history of heart disease, it’s a must-know number.
Why These Labs Matter: Together, these five labs capture hormone balance, metabolic health, and cardiovascular risk, which we consider to be the foundation for long-term wellness. They also provide a roadmap for what to do next.
And here’s a truth most women never hear: the standard medical playbook was written decades ago, largely based on research conducted on white men in the 1950s. Even the “classic” description of a heart attack (crushing left-sided chest pain radiating into the neck and back with sweating) is not how most women experience a heart attack. Women’s symptoms often present differently, yet the system continues to treat them the same.
If your results raise red flags, we go deeper. For example, if there are signs of thyroid dysfunction, we’ll order T3/T4 testing. But we don’t shotgun labs just to rack up numbers. Every test we run has a purpose and ties back to your goals.
That’s why at 91WhiskeyRX we refuse to take a one-size-fits-all, shotgun approach. We incorporate the tests that matter most for women, dig deeper when needed, and always align labs with your personal goals and history. Because women deserve more than generic care built on outdated research.
