What the Heck Are Peptides?

If you’ve been in the gym, the endurance world, or on Instagram for more than five minutes, chances are you’ve heard someone raving about peptides.


They’re hyped as miracle molecules for recovery, muscle growth, fat loss, and even anti-aging. But what are they really? Snake oil? Biohacking gold? Something in between? Let’s break it down, no BS.


What are peptides? Peptides are short chains of amino acids, which are the same building blocks that make up proteins. Think of them as small, specific messengers your body uses to communicate. 


Unlike generic supplements that “support” health in vague, indirect ways, peptides give your body precise instructions like: “Build this tissue,” “recover faster,” “burn fat,” or “sleep deeper.” It’s molecular science and in the right hands, they’re powerful.


Are all peptides the same? Absolutely not. Different peptides are used for different jobs. We use a few here at 91WhiskeyRX, depending on the client and our goals. To name a few:

  • BPC-157: BPC-157 accelerates tissue healing and reduces inflammation. A great use case for this peptide is an athlete bouncing back from injuries or just worn-down joints.

  • CJC-1295 + Ipamorelin: This combination works together to stimulate the body’s natural growth hormone release. That means better recovery, improved sleep, and body recomposition (less fat, more muscle).

  • Thymosin Alpha-1: Thymosin Alpha-1 supports immune function and is especially useful during periods of high stress, intense training, or post-illness recovery.


These peptides aren’t meant to be taken blindly. They work because they’re targeted and personalized, not because they’re trendy.


What does everyone get wrong about peptides? We get this question a lot and most people think they’re a shortcut. We hear a  lot about people who want to jump right into peptide protocol thinking it's the answer. It’s the same mindset when creatine first hit the market, which had people taking it assuming they’d gain muscle without ever picking up a barbell. 


Peptides will be successful if you’re doing the work. If you’re not sleeping, not training consistently, and not eating for your goals, no peptide is going to magically fix that. In fact, jumping in too early might actually backfire because some peptides increase hunger which can lead to weight gain if your nutrition isn’t dialed in. Others impact your A1C. If you’re already borderline pre-diabetic and don’t know it, you could push yourself into full-blown diabetes without realizing it.


Before taking any peptide, we recommend working with a doctor who understands how to dose them, ongoing labs to track how your body responds, and a personalized protocol based on you (not what’s trending on TikTok). 


Are peptides better than regular supplements? Here’s the problem with most over-the-counter supplements: they’re broad sweeping. It’s like they’re yelling at your body. “HEY! BE HEALTHIER!” While on the other side, Peptides are specific. Instead of yelling, they’re whispering a specific command: “Recover that muscle. Lower that inflammation. Boost that hormone.”


When properly dosed and medically supervised, peptides offer a level of precision and impact that multivitamins and greens powders can’t touch.


Who can benefit from peptides? While you often hear about peptides in the context of athletes, anyone can benefit. Peptides work with human physiology and that means you, not just the pro athletes and influencers, can benefit when it’s done right.
