Most people don’t meet their future business partner when they stumble in from Afghanistan and crash on their couch. But that’s exactly how this story begins.
Before he was the co-founder of 91WhiskeyRx, Dan McMahon was a business student at Notre Dame with a roommate named Patrick Voll. When Patrick mentioned that his older brother Matt was coming home from deployment and needed a place to crash, Dan didn’t hesitate. He offered up the couch.
That decision kicked off a lasting friendship, built on trust, shared values, and a steady fire to do things differently. Years later, that bond became the foundation for a healthcare company built to help people take back control of their health.
Dan grew up outside New York City in a tight-knit family where doing the right thing always came before doing the easy thing. That mindset, shaped by generations of service in the Army, Navy, and NYPD, never left him. It guided him first through business school, then into a career working with health plans to actually make people healthier.
For more than a decade, Dan has been leading innovation from the inside out, including launching Mercer’s Health Transformation Collaborative, a first-of-its-kind model connecting the best new health solutions to major employer health plans. He’s dedicated his career to helping high-potential healthcare companies scale and succeed.
But like many high performers, Dan’s personal health took a back seat while he focused on his career and raising two daughters. Long days turned into long years. Stress stacked up. And even someone who spent his career in healthcare found himself on autopilot.
Then came the call from his old buddy Matt.
Matt wanted to start a new kind of healthcare company, one that didn’t cut corners, didn’t chase volume, and didn’t accept “you’re fine” as a medical plan. He told Dan, “I need your brain on this. Also, it’ll get your sorry ass back in shape.”
That was all it took. Dan was in.
What he brings to 91WhiskeyRx isn’t just business chops or strategy. He brings balance. Long-game vision. And a deep belief that health is about taking ownership of your life and showing up for the people who count on you.
Matt might be the one with the combat boots and the clinical creds. But Dan is the builder. The steady hand. The guy who makes sure the mission lasts.
At 91WhiskeyRx, Dan is the quiet force behind the engine. And he wouldn’t have it any other way.
